Sources are saying that Tom Hardy is in talks to portray Jafar in Guy Ritchie's Aladdin remake.

Right before he broke through big with the likes of “Bronson” and “Inception,” Hardy was cast in the key role of gay gangster Handsome Bob in Ritchie’s 2008 British crime comedy “RocknRolla”. And now, the UK paper TheSun is reporting that Richie has been in talks with Hardy to play the main villain Jafar in the upcoming movie. According to a source close to The Sun (no pun intended), Ritchie is a big fan of Hardy's work.

“Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup," the source said.

They added to The Sun: “There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he's certainly one of Guy’s favoured choices. It just depends on schedules whether he’ll be able to sign up.”

Hardy’s star has risen considerably in the past nine years, following his commercial breakout role in director Christopher Nolan’s Inception. The mind-bending blockbuster not only propelled Hardy to such coveted roles as Bane in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Max Rocketansky in director George Miller’s reboot Mad Max: Fury Road, and an Oscar-nominated turn as Leonardo DiCaprio’s nemesis in The Revenant; he’ll soon be scaling greater heights in Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk, as well as the surprise choice of the titular character in Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff Venom.

The film is set to keep the musical element of the original, which means Hardy may be required to sing. Will Smith is presently in negotiations to play Genie, the only major casting announcement so far beyond an apparent worldwide search for two actors of Middle Eastern descent for Aladdin and Jasmine. Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall is in talks to play Princess Jasmine. The boat has not sunk yet, as Thrilwall is Yemeni and Egyptian ancestry on her mother's side. The makers are doing something right.
