Warner Bros. Pictures is taking over U.S. distribution on “Paddington 2” and set to release the film in North American cinemas on January 12th 2018.
Much like Paddington the bear himself, Paddington 2 has secured itself a new home. The Weinstein Company is in financial trouble in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations, and reports indicated the company was trying to offload Paddington 2 to another studios before bankruptcy filings. Now, according to Deadline, Paddington 2 is heading to Warner Bros. after the company gained victory over the likes of Lionsgate, Sony, and Global Road. Even better news? The film will maintain its January 12, 2018 domestic release date.
Based on the best-selling and internationally adored series of children’s stories by Michael Bond, the film is once again directed by BAFTA nominee Paul King, from a script by King and Simon Farnaby. It stars Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin. Ben Whishaw is the voice of Paddington.
"Paddington 2” continues the story of the enduringly popular little bear in the trademark blue coat and red hat that touched audiences worldwide. The new story finds Paddington happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s hundredth birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.
The sequel opened solidly in the U.K. last weekend with $10.9 million, 60% above its predecessor. It’s fully financed by Studiocanal and produced by David Heyman. Warner bought distribution rights for the film in the U.S. and Canada from Studiocanal and TWC/Dimension Film.
