Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has made his personal pick for the actor he'd like to portray Shazam opposite his Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe film Shazam! - none other than Armie Hammer.
The Rock has been set to play the role of villain in the Shazam movie for quite some time, however, we're still waiting to see who plays the hero. Recently, Dwayne Johnson was asked who he'd like to go up against in the forthcoming Shazam movie, and the People's Champ had one, really solid, idea. He didn't technically give the name away, but he dropped the actor's biggest role to date, The Lone Ranger. Jonhson explained why he thinks Hammer could be a great choice...
For example, I'm going to throw one name out here, and I want to see how the fans will are gonna react to this. A guy who I'd met, and after I met him I went 'Wow! That guy is such a cool guy! He is a lot bigger than I thought he would be' And when I walked away, I remember telling our producer, who I have worked with for a long time Hiram Garcia, we both looked at each other and were like 'Possibly Shazam?!' and we went 'Yes!' I'm not even going to say his name, I'm just going to say Lone Ranger.
You could see that right? I don’t know if he’s interested, and by the way, the studio doesn’t even know that we’ve been having these conversations. I just remember meeting him and walking away going, ‘Man that guy would look great I bet as Shazam’—and by the way, he’s one of a handful [of names].”
Hammer portrayed the Lone Ranger in Disney's live action adaptation of the pulp hero. He was also previously cast as Batman in George Miller's Justice League: Mortal before the film was cancelled. He has also recently been rumored as a possible candidate for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern Corps film.
An issue that could potentially keep Hammer out of the film, however, is his less-than-impressive box office run since his promising mainstream start in 2010’s widely-acclaimed The Social Network. DC may not want to bank on such an unproven actor given their recent failure to find critical success for DCEU films. Regardless, it seems fans will have to wait a little longer for Shazam! to find its lead.
