Lucasfilm and Disney have a lot of rewriting to do as it already lost the focal point of 'Episode 9' story, especially it refuses the use of CGI.
Star Wars fans are still waiting for this December’s The Last Jedi to reach theaters, but Lucasfilm is already in the stages of planning Star Wars: Episode IX and aim to start rolling the cameras on that film in January 2018. In the latest issue of Vanity Fair, which revealed a range of covers featuring the cast of the upcoming The Last Jedi earlier this week, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed the new filming date for Episode IX and it is in Jan, 2018. Also confirmed was that Carrie Fisher will not appear, nor be recreated in CGI, but was originally set to be at the film’s forefront. A report in Vanity Fair reads:
Fisher completed her part in Episode VIII late last summer, when principal photography on the film wrapped. “She was having a blast,” said Kennedy. “The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”
Kennedy has previously denied that any unused or digitally-created footage of Fisher will be used (as was done in Rogue One), despite earlier comments to the contrary from the actress's brother.
"We don't have any intention of beginning a trend of re-creating actors who are gone," Kennedy reiterated in the franchise's Vanity Fair profile.
In other recent Star Wars news, Japanese promotional material teased a 'shocking truth' will be revealed in The Last Jedi, which reaches cinemas on December 15th, 2017. The film is produced by Lucasfilm and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis in returning roles. New cast members include Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
