Spider-Man just climbed to the top of this year’s superhero box office.
Spider-Man: Homecoming has become the highest-grossing superhero film of 2017 so far. The movie has nudged its way up the list of superhero movies’ performance at the box office through a solid showing in China. The global box office total for Spider-Man: Homecoming now stands at $874 million worldwide. The movie has beaten out Logan and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though both Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League are yet to be released. The latter is tracking for a big $150 million opening weekend, so there’s a chance it may over take Tom Holland’s first solo movie as the wall-crawler.
Domestically, Spider-Man: Homecoming still trails behind both Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $331.9 million, making it the fourth-highest grossing film of the year in the United States.
Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly and Bokeem Woodbine, as well as Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Michael Chernus, Kenneth Choi, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Angourie Rice and Abraham Attah. Here’s the official synopsis:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to play in theatres in both the United States and Canada. However, if you’d like to bring the web-slinger home, the film is right here on this site for you to check!
The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently dated for July 5th, 2019. All of the first film’s stars should be back, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, and more. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told the Toronto Sun that the sequel will mean quite a bit to the MCU when it comes out in 2019:
“The original 22-movie arc ends with the untitled Avengers in May of 2019, and then two months later it will be Peter Parker and Spider-Man that usher us into the aftermath and how things proceed from there.”
