Sony Pictures Officially Revives Venom

Despite having partnered with Marvel to bring Spider-Man to "Marvel Cinematic Universe", Sony has not yet wished to give up on the Venom project.

Nonetheless, for over a decade, Sony Pictures has been trying to launch a Venom movie to no avail. But at the end of February last year, Marvel and Sony planned to set Spider-Man on its rebooted path, which means that the spin-offs such as Venom and Sinister Six would be canceled. However, many reports have indicated that Sony has not really wanted to get rid of the spin-offs and now, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Sony turned the green light for a movie centering on Venom only.

Accordingly, in this project Venom recognizably exists as a character, but without any Spider-Man connections. Sony’s new plan for Venom, announced today by THR, is apparently a solo feature set to be written by Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter Dante Harper.

Venom made his first big-screen appearance in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, where he was played by Topher Grace. This character was scripted by David Michelinie and drawn by the legendary Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. In the original series, Venom is an alien symbiote that need a human host to survive. In return, the alien empowers its victim with incredible powers. For the longest time, Venom was a villain but then morphed into an anti-hero and even (almost) good guy.

Currently, it is still unknown which direction the new movie will guide Venom. Although the director for the movie is not officially found yet, if the actual production is progressing, may soon be hearing more about the director and the cast.

The producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man) will return to supervise the project along with Palak Patel and Eric Fineman. The film still has no officially release date.
