Shazam! Will Be Played By Two Different Actors

Director David F. Sandberg says they won’t use de-aging technology in Shazam.

Shazam! is the next DC movie slated to go into production and it comes with a different type of superhero. Shazam, or Captain Marvel, is a kid that becomes an adult superhero when he says the magic word. This presents some unique challenges for a filmmaker but director David F. Sandberg recently spoke to Collider and how movies like Annabelle have helped him get ready for a project like Shazam!

“Well I mean overall, I’ve been working with kids in both my movies to my success and there will be kids in Shazam and the main character is this kid who becomes an adult.”

While the choice seems like a no-brainer, de-aging actors has been growing in popularity for years. It was first used to make Professor X and Magneto younger in X-Men: The Last Stand, and has become increasingly common in genre franchises.

“Yeah and they’ve done quite well, I mean Kurt Russell was in the latest Guardians was really well made I thought, but I think there’s a limit to it as well. You probably can’t do someone to be a kid. Why create that hassle for yourself?”

What Sandberg says here definitely makes sense. While it probably would be possible to just de-age the actor who plays Shazam for his scenes as Billy, it would be a lot of work and an unnecessary hassle. Not to mention it might end up looking awkward in the end because there’s such a big age gap between the two. As such, getting a different person for each role is without a doubt the right way to go.

Shazam! has sat quietly in its own corner of the DCEU over the past couple of years. Dwayne Johnson has often talked about his role in the movie as villain Black Adam. But it has since been confirmed that his character was completely cut out of the script and will be getting his own standalone movie sometime in the future. It is expected that Shazam! is moving forward so quickly because they were able to nail down director David F. Sandberg, who has a vision for what he wants this movie to be. Sandberg refused to give an actual start date. But he did offer up these thoughts.

"Yeah, I don't know if it's official. ... It's coming up."

Summary: A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.

Shazam!, directed by David Sandberg, will be written by Henry Gayden. It will be released on April 5th, 2019.
