Resident Evil Reboot Is Already Happening

The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has not ended after all.

Though direvtor/producer Paul WS Anderson seemed adamant that this year's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was the last visit to that particular video game well, it would appear that production company Constantin Film is not quite as ready to say goodbye. Variety is reporting that a reboot is already in the early stages.

According to the report, Constantin Film board chairman Martin Moszkowicz confirmed at Cannes Film Festival that the German studio is developing a Resident Evil series reboot. Constantin Film, which has produced all the previous Resident Evil films, still owns rights to the franchise. According to Moszkowicz, the goal is to milk six movies out of the deal, which is the same number as the original series. There’s no denying that the Resident Evil movies have been the most successful video game movie series to date, so it’s not all too surprising that Constantin Films would already be looking at continuing the franchise in one way or another.

Based on the Capcom video game, the series launched in 2002 with Paul W.S. Anderson directing, and Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Bernd Eichinger, and Samuel Hadida producing the first of a six-movie series. The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date, making it Europe’s most successful independent horror-genre movie franchise in history and the highest-grossing film series to be based on a video game.

Inspired by the survival-horror video game of the same name (known in Japan as Biohazard), Resident Evil is set in a future where the a bioengineering pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation triggered a zombie apocalypse when its T-virus infected Earth’s population. Milla Jovovich starred as Alice, a former security operative for Umbrella who turns against the corporation.

Whether Resident Evil can return to form has yet to be seen, but it’s nice to see Constantin is considering a fresh approach instead of trying to continue Alice’s story.
