Fox has bought the spec script “Crater” by John J. Griffin with Shawn Levy in talks to direct.

Tracking Board is reporting that 20th Century Fox has snagged Stranger Things producer and director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel) to produce and direct Crater. The script originated as an idea by VFX expert Rpin Suwannath, which then became a spec pitch by writer John J. Griffin.

“Crater is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of Stand By Me, set on a moon colony. After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.”

Once known as a director of Steve Martin comedy vehicles, Levy graduated to light, family-friendly action fare with Night at the Museum and its two sequels, and the Hugh Jackman vehicle Real Steel. Levy has worked extensively in television, directing everything from Animorphs to The Famous Jett Jackson to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Levy has directed four episodes of Stranger Things, including the season 2 eps “The Pollywog,” which introduced Dustin’s new friend from the Upside Down, and “Will the Wise” in which Will Byers showed off his magical ability to scribble out huge, elaborate jigsaw-puzzle maps that can only be deciphered by guys who work at Radio Shack. Levy also reportedly will re-team with Real Steel studio Amblin for the sci-fi movie The Fall.

Levy will produce Crater through his 21 Laps banner with Dan Levine and visual effects supervisor Rpin Suwannath. Suwannath also developed the idea with Griffin. In the meantime, Levy is currently in pre-production on the video game adaptation Uncharted with Spider-Man actor Tom Holland for Sony, and is also developing a remake of John Carpenter’s 1984 film Starman.
