As Matt Reeves steps into the director’s chair for The Batman, Warner Bros. and DC are also developing a separate live-action movie centered on another famous hero from Gotham City.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is currently plotting a Dick Grayson flick with LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay at the helm. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) has reportedly been tapped to pen the script. McKay made his feature film directorial debut with “Lego Batman,” which has grossed $110 domestically in its first 12 days and another $72 million internationally. He was animation co-director on “The Lego Movie.” Dubuque’s credits include “The Judge” and “A Family Man.”
Nightwing may seem like an odd choice, considering he has not been introduced or mentioned in the official DC film universe at this point in time. However, for the DCEU, this isn't an entirely unexpected move. Batman remains DC's most popular character, so it makes sense that Warner Bros. would continue to capitalize on that by greenlighting more Batman-focused films. Nightwing is the alter-ego of Dick Grayson, who began his career as a crime fighter as the original Robin. Grayson’s family was killed during their high-flying circus show, and he used those skills to join with the caped crusader after being adopted by Bruce Wayne.
The Nightwing project joins Warner Bros.' growing DC Extended Universe as the studio focuses on mining some of DC's most beloved characters for new films (as an example, Gotham City Sirens, with David Ayer attached to direct, will focus on the female villains of the universe, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn). The next films to hit theaters include Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot (June 2), the star-studded Justice League (Nov. 17) and Aquaman starring Jason Momoa (Oct. 5, 2018). A sequel to Suicide Squad, The Batman starring Ben Affleck, a Shazam film, a Flash film and a Cyborg project are also in the works.
