The Minecraft film, based on the massively popular video game franchise, will be released on 24 May 2019, according to the game’s developer, Mojang.

According to the Mojang announcement, the Warner Bros. produced Minecraft movie will be released in 3D & IMAX. Details about the film's production remain sparse. In an interview with Collider in February, producer Roy Lee said the filmmakers and game designers were collaborating in some capacity on the project. "[Mojang] can give us insight into future updates so we can put things into the movie around the same time they relaunch newer versions of the game," said Lee, "and at the same time, potentially taking ideas from the movie and putting them into the game."

The film will be available to watch in 3D and IMAX, and it will be directed by Rob McElhenney of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fame. With that in mind, viewers can expect the movie to have a comedic tone.

Mojang COO Vu Bui tells The Guardian that they wanted the movie to have a story within the "Minecraft" universe, but not about the "Minecraft" universe itself. He says that he feels that having an official lore for the universe will limit players from coming up with their own stories to tell when they play the game. This way, the universe remains as an "open sandbox" where possibilities are only limited by imagination.

Minecraft, created by Swedish game designer Markus “Notch” Persson, is a procedurally generated sandbox game in which players harvest elements from the world by day to build tools and shelter to protect themselves from zombie attack at night. Since its release in November 2011, it has become the second-bestselling game of all time (behind Tetris) and, thanks to a interface that allows players to build pretty much anything they want, has been adopted as a teaching aid.

Three years sounds just a lot, however, Vu Bui writes on the company website, "Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?" He then assures that as time goes on they will share "loads" more of information.

So let's wait together!
