The Raid director Gareth Evans is in talks to direct a Deathstroke feature film which would star Joe Manganiello, according to The Wrap.
According to The Wrap, director Gareth Evans, best known for his work on the acclaimed action movie The Raid, is in talks to helm a Deathstroke spin-off movie for Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed this story with their own sources.
Manganiello was originally reported to have been cast as Deathstroke for Ben Affleck's The Batman in September 2016. “He’s a great villain because — I just had an instinctive feeling that he would match up with him well. You know, I’m a big admirer of that character as well, especially in the New 52 the way that they did Deathstroke, and I thought that it could work,” Affleck told Collider. But once Affleck stepped down as director, Matt Reeves came in and decided to no longer use the previous script. With Manganiello’s future as the character up in the air, he coyly revealed in July, “I know everything but I can’t say any of it.”
Evans rose to prominence as the director of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film The Raid and its sequel, both of which are known for their ambitious fight sequences. He next has the period thriller The Apostle set to debut via Netflix. Magic Mike star Manganiello has Dwayne Johnson's video game adaptation Rampage due out in April.
Warner Bros. has a lot of DC projects in the works, so it's unclear how this fits into their schedule and how quickly the project could come together. At the moment there's no indication of a potential release date being eyed as the project is in the early stages. Still, this is a potentially exciting development as anyone who's seen Evans' movies knows, this guy can direct action arguably better than anyone working today. We'll be sure to keep you up to date as more details on the Deathstroke movie are made available.
