Veteran actor Donald Sutherland has come on board James Gray's sci-fi epic "Ad Astra".

Two-time Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland has signed on to join the cast of James Gray's upcoming sci-fi feature Ad Astra. Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and Ruth Negga also are attached to the project.

Gray co-wrote the script with Ethan Gross, and a few nuggets of information about the film have escaped from the soundless vacuum of space, albeit ones that could evolve during the movie's journey to the screen. The plot reportedly sees space engineer Roy McBride (Pitt) heading out into the solar system 20 years after his father (Jones) left on a one-way mission to Neptune, aiming to find signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence. Now Roy is looking to track down what happened to his father, with the story apparently boasting a Heart Of Darkness-in-space vibe and some talk of a threat from the dad.

Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are producing under their Plan B banner with RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira, Keep Your Head Productions’ Anthony Katagas and Gray. John Finn, Sasha Compère, Bayardo De Murguia, Bobby Nish and Kayla Adams also fill the cast.

Ad Astra continues a string of successful film partnerships between New Regency and Plan B, including the Oscar-nominated The Big Short and Oscar winner 12 Years a Slave, as well as director Ryan Coogler's upcoming feature Wrong Answer, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and starring Michael B. Jordan.

The project is still in early stages and, consequently, no details were provided about Sutherland’s character. The iconic veteran actor is known from classic films such as 1967’s The Dirty Dozen, 1970’s M*A*S*H, contemporary hit franchise The Hunger Games as the villainous President Snow and recent television shows such as Ice and Crossing Lines. His upcoming projects include a romantic drama opposite Helen Mirren, The Leisure Seeker, musical Basmati Blues, comedy Measure of a Man and will appear in Danny Boyle’s fact-based FX crime series Trust.
