Justin, 40, will appear alongside returning cast members Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn who are all reprising their roles from the first film.
With the success of last year's comedy Bad Moms, studio STX is practically planning its own cinematic universe around the original. There's a Bad Dads spin-off in development, but the focus is on the sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas, which will once again star Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Kathryn Hahn. And now, in a supporting role, Justin Hartley, who has become best known recently for hit US drama This Is Us.
This feels like a match made in heaven, as This Is Us has quickly become a pop culture and ratings juggernaut for NBC, and hiring a cast member like Justin Hartley cashes in on that buzz. Speaking of cashing in on buzz, A Bad Moms Christmas is doing just that, as the $20 million production budget for Bad Moms ended up grossing $179 million worldwide, solidifying the film's status as a humble hit for STX Entertainment. Considering both properties' fan-bases tend to overlap quite a bit, it's a move that sets the Bad Moms universe up for success a second time around.
The second installment sees the under-appreciated and over-burdened trio coping with the stresses of the most wonderful time of year as their own mothers visit for the holidays. Hartley will play Ty Swindle, a fit and handsome firefighter by day, who doubles as an erotic dancer by night. A very sincere gentleman, Swindle immediately jives with Carla (Hanh) during a waxing appointment. The new movie is title A Bad Moms Christmas, because every comedy gets a little bit better when snow, twinkly lights, and the mad rush of department store shopping is peppered in.
Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are once more writing and directing this one. Suzanne Todd will produce while Bill Block serves as executive producer. The movie will hit US cinemas on November. No UK date has been announced.
Hartley is mostly famous for his television roles and he will be returning as Kevin Pearson in NBC's family drama 'This Is Us' which has been commissioned for two more seasons. The hunk also starred in 'Mistresses', 'Revenge' and 'Smallville'. Hartley is engaged to former 'Days of Our Lives' actress Chrishell Stause.
