Beyond the kicking, punching and general bashing in of heads, Leitch is promising to stick to Deadpool’s winning formula: four-wall-breaking, sass-mouthed charm, thermonuclear glibness and all.

A box-office monster last year, Deadpool’s expectation-exceeding success was always going to lead to Deadpool 2. Because Tim Miller's not coming back for Deadpool 2, there exists the opportunity to radically change the definition of what a Deadpool movie is... but according to director David Leitch, that's definitely not part of the game plan.

In an interview with CinemaBlend at CinemaCon Wednesday, the filmmaker addresses how approach of giving something new to fans while maintaining the tone and spirit of Miller’s movie, in the Deadpool sequel:

“I think you have to pay homage to this movie that’s so beloved. Everybody is anticipating it. And I think we have to find a way to make it distinctly our own, and we’re doing that. The DNA of Deadpool shouldn’t change. He’s such a lovable character, we’re going to carry that through.”

David Leitch also promises to ramp up the action. Talking to Empire, he says: “There's more action in this film. I hope we can expand it and make it interesting in an 87Eleven kinda way.”

Beyond the kicking, punching and general bashing in of heads, Leitch is promising to stick to Deadpool’s winning formula, four-wall-breaking, sass-mouthed charm, thermonuclear glibness and all. “The completely irreverent tone was the thing that won me over about the first Deadpool movie,” he enthuses. “I want to deliver on what they did and at the same time hopefully expand the universe.”

As the foundation of his own visual effects studio clearly proves, Tim Miller's greatest strength coming to Deadpool was in the digital realm. And as he himself noted above, David Leitch's greatest asset is his eye for action. In addition to having an extensive background in stunt work, Leitch also co-created the action design production company 87Eleven 20 years ago, and also co-directed one of the greatest action movies of the modern era: 2014's John Wick. It's the fact that this prowess will be meshing with the comedic skills of the Deadpool writers and star that makes Deadpool 2 such an incredibly exciting upcoming project.
