The movie has had a disappointing debut weekend at the US box office, earning $31,525,000 only.
Despite stellar critical reviews, strong advance ticket sales and plenty of buzz, Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” has made far less than expected on its opening weekend at the US box office. The movie made $12.7m on Thursday night and Friday, $11.4m on Saturday and a projected $7.4m on Sunday from just over 4,000 cinemas. The film earned a further $50 million overseas where it also opened in most markets this past week, bringing its worldwide opening weekend total to $81.7 million. Costing $150 million to make, the film has to earn $400 million worldwide to make profit, that goal seems highly unlikely at this point.
However, the filmmakers can keep their fingers crossed as Asian play will be key for the film. The best markets ultimately should include a mix of the UK, Korea, Japan, China and France. China is dated for November 10 while Japan, a huge market for Blade Runner 2049, is going October 27. Korea is October 12 and in Europe, it will have a chance to build if it can keep screens, the next major release on the horizon is Thor: Ragnarok starting October 24.
Blade Runner 2049 is set thirty years after the events of the first film, following a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford lead a diverse cast that also includes Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, with Dave Bautista and Jared Leto. Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners) directs from a script by original Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, with Ridley Scott producing.
