Director Chad Stahelski to Return For John Wick Chapter 3

Chad Stahelski, the co-director of John Wick and the director of John Wick: Chapter 2 will return to helm yet another film.

Following the worldwide box office success of John Wick: Chapter 2 last year, earning more than $171 million worldwide on an estimated $40 million production budget, a third entry in the series that stars Keanu Reeves as an agent of reticent revenge is already scheduled for release on May 17, 2019. And according to That Hashtag Show, Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first John Wick along with David Leitch, before going solo on the second one, has officially signed on to helm John Wick: Chapter 3. The film’s producers are aiming to have cameras rolling on the production by March 1 in New York City.

John Wick 3 is still over a year away from release, so aside from Chad Stahelski directing again and Derek Solstad, the writer of the previous two John Wick movies, returning to pen the screenplay, no significant official details about the threequel have come out. But earlier this week, it was reported that along with Laurence Fishburne and Ruby Rose reprising The Bower King and Ares, respectively, John Wick 3 had tapped The Wolverine star Hiroyuki Sanada to play the main antagonist, the head of a Japanese crime syndicate. However, along with confirming Stahelski's involvement in John Wick 3, EW reports that while Sanada has indeed been approached for the role, a formal offer hasn't been made yet, as the actor wants to read the script first. Keanu Reeves has also expressed interest in bringing Tilda Swinton onto the movie.

As for what to expect with John Wick: Chapter 3, plot details are obviously scant at the moment. The one constant will, of course, be Keanu Reeves, running around in a cool suit with a dog by his side and multiple guns at the ready. The conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 2 found Reeves’ John Wick an outcast from the surprisingly complex hitman underworld, forced to run for his life. Stahelski told Collider that one thing he’d like to explore in John Wick 3 is the ever-evolving intricacaies of the series:

“We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world… I feel like there are all these different subtleties that I skipped over in Number Two, that I’d like to go back to on [chapter three] and show you the inner workings of different parts of New York. So rather than massive set pieces, I’d like to show you cooler and more intricate ones… I think it would be a mistake budget wise and creatively to just go big and blow up a freeway. That’s not our gig. That’s a comic book or a Bond gig. We want to show you cool and intricate details.”
