Dunkirk Director Christopher Nolan Cast Harry Styles for his Potential, Not His Celebrity

Christopher Nolan had no idea how famous Harry Styles was when he cast him.

Styles is a member of the pop British boyband One Direction, performing alongside Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. The band's first single "What Makes You Beautiful" became one of the highest-selling singles of all-time, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide. He's famous all over the world, it's the undeniable truth!

However, director Christopher Nolan doesn't seem to have quite grasped how famous Styles is when he cast him as one of the young soldiers trapped on the beaches of France during WWII's Operation Dynamo.

"I don't think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was" Nolan admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. "I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."

There’s really no reason to doubt Nolan is sincere in his remarks since through his 19-year film career he’s generally cast talented actors in his projects in favor of brand name celebrities or movie stars. In fact, Nolan not only assembles his casts from the best actors available in the pool of talent from today, he has a knack for remembering venerable performers like Rutger Hauer (Batman Begins), Tom Berenger (Inception) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises) who have otherwise sadly fallen off of other big name directors’ radars.

Dunkirk is a historical suspense-thriller based on the Battle of Dunkirk, where Germany advanced into France during World War II. The Allied forces were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, and forced to evacuate using civilian ships and spare naval vessels. The process was slow and resulted in great loss, but hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers were brought to safety. In the film, Styles will star as a British soldier named Alex. It's the singer's first major film role. The movie will hit theaters on July 21st.
