According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock is in talks to star in Netflix‘s post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box.
The 2001 The Blind Side Best Actress Oscar winner will headline the Netflix-exclusive post-apocalyptic movie Bird Box, an adaptation of the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman. This will mark Bullock's first lead role in a genre movie since Gravity and will be a marked difference to her upcoming part in the female-led heist movie Ocean’s Eight.
Bullock’s role in Bird Box will presumably be the book’s protagonist Malorie, a mother of two young children, a boy and a girl, who is desperately trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world that was razed four years earlier by a massive, mysterious force that incites a homicidal madness in people. However, she must take her family on a perilous journey to safety amongst a group of survivors who helped her in the past. That trek, however, requires trained ears, since this ruined world carries deadly consequences when looking at the wrong thing. The enormous odyssey notably includes a 20-mile downriver run in a rowboat while blindfolded.
Before Netflix took over, Universal acquired the book in 2013 with screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) penning the screenplay. Mama and IT helmer Andy Muschietti was originally attached as director, but now Oscar-winning Danish helmer Susanne Bier (In a Better World, The Night Manager) will direct from Heisserer’s script.
Netflix has recently made a concerted effort in getting A-list actors into their original productions, with Brad Pitt in War Machine and Will Smith in Bright. This is something that Netflix film chief Scott Stuber is reportedly keen to continue to do for future projects. In this case the combination of an Oscar-winning actress and director should bode well for the quality of the movie, and an Oscar nominee as a screenwriter doesn’t hurt the potential either.
Stuber (Ted, Patriots Day) will produce Bird Box for an August production start. Netflix has yet to set a release date.
Bullock recently wrapped production on “Ocean’s Eight” and was most recently seen in “Our Brand is Crisis.” Bier is coming off her Emmy win for directing “The Night Manager” for AMC.
