Rising star Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is in talks to play the young male lead in Paramount's Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.

Following a brief appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, young star Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is, per The Hollywood Reporter, in talks to star opposite Hailee Steinfeld in Paramount Pictures‘ upcoming Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Travis Knight. Details on Lendeborg Jr.’s role are still under wraps along with the plot but the film has been confirmed to be a prequel which will focus on Bumblebee in the 1980s. Lendeborg Jr. joins Steinfeld as a tomboy that holds a job as a mechanic after school who forms a connection with the lovable fan favorite Autobot. When their lives are interrupted by evil Decepticons, the two have to figure out how to manage without Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots.

Lendeborg Jr. made his debut in 2015's The Land and is on screens now for a small role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He'll also make appearances in Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens and Alita: Battle Angel, out 20 July next year.

The movie project is the first spinoff in what the studio hopes will be a Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and offshoots from a line of movies that have generated more than $3.7 billion worldwide. The most recent film, Transformers: The Last Knight, hit theaters June 23, and has earned $495.7 million worldwide so far.

Transformers producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has revealed that Bumblebee will be a “smaller” movie than the other Transformers films, which were all huge-budget action extravaganzas directed with explosive abandon by Michael Bay and featuring multiple characters from the Transformers toy series and animated properties. Di Bonaventura said the movie will focus on Bumblebee dealing with life without the guiding presence of Optimus Prime, and will show how his relationship develops with Steinfeld’s character after the two find each other. Decepticons of course will show up to make life miserable for Bumblebee and the human characters he encounters.

Bumblebee is slated for a June 8, 2018, release.
