The '90s classic Are You Afraid of the Dark? is set to get a movie remake.

After nearly two decades, it may be high time for the Midnight Society to reconvene in a brand new cinematic adaptation of Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Tracking Board is reporting that a film version of the series is being worked on by Paramount Players, a new division of Paramount Pictures which is dedicated to projects intended for younger audiences. Created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, the 1990s anthology series was set around a group of kids who called themselves the Midnight Society and would tell various scary stories, some of which were based on fairytales and urban legends but with an added modern twist. Several members of The Midnight Society went on to become well known actors as they grew up, including Rachel Blanchard (TV’s Clueless), JoAnna Garcia (Reba, Once Upon a Time), and Elisha Cuthbert (24). Several young actors who appeared in one or more of the ghost stories also went on to have very successful careers, including Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049), Jewel Staite (Firefly), and Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon, RoboCop).

Dauberman spoke to THR about how excited he was about the project and the “darker, scarier” aspect of the show he hopes to bring into the movie.

The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We're going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.

Additionally, Gary Dauberman, one of the screenwriters of this summer’s smash hit IT, will be writing the screenplay. IT was one of the best written and critically successful horror films in recent years, so it’s a sign that Are You Afraid of the Dark? is attracting fresh talent. Maybe former guest stars like Ryan Gosling and Jay Baruchel are looking to get the living daylights scared out of them a second time.
