Anne Hathaway in Talks to Replace Amy Schumer in The Barbie Movie

Anne Hathaway is talking about stepping into the role of Barbie for Sony Pictures.

After losing Amy Schumer due to scheduling conflicts, Sony looks to have found its replacement for the upcoming live-action “Barbie” pic, with Anne Hathaway in talks for the lead role. If a deal can be made, Hathaway would play a character who lives in Barbieland, where she gets kicked out basically because she’s not perfect enough, is a bit eccentric and doesn’t quite fit the mold. She then goes on an adventure in the real world, and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.

Sony has been developing a live-action Barbie movie for several years, with the goal of breathing new life into the 50-year-old brand while tackling issues such as female empowerment and what it means to be perfect.

Still, now the question is whether Hathaway’s own schedule will accommodate it. At the same time, rising Australian director Alethea Jones, who has Fun Mom Dinner incoming, is in talks to helm the pic from a script by Hilary Winston (The LEGO Ninjago Movie), Schumer and Kim Caramele, after being handpicked by Hathaway, who was integral in the search for a filmmaker. Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal will produce the film.

Hathaway, who won an Oscar for her work in 2012’s Les Misérables, was last seen in the indie Colossal and will next be seen palling around with Rihanna and Sarah Paulson in Ocean's 8 and with Rebel Wilson in Nasty Women, MGM's remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

The Ankler first reported the news about Hathaway.
