Lionsgate’s “The Glass Castle” will open August 11, 2017, the studio announced Thursday.
Lionsgate has announced a release date for its upcoming film “The Glass Castle.” It will bow on August 11 with Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts leading the cast. Based on one of the longest-running New York Times best-sellers, The Glass Castle tells the story of Jeannette Walls’ unconventional upbringing at the hands of her deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant parents, and her journey towards acceptance and fulfillment.
Here is the Amazon description of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls: “When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.”
Larson’s “Short Term 12” writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton wrote and directed “The Glass Castle,” with Andrew Lanham as co-writer. Gil Netter and Ken Kao produced via Netter Productions.
Jennifer Lawrence was originally attached to star in the film, as she and Lionsgate have enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with the “Hunger Games” franchise. However, the Oscar winner dropped out of the project and was replaced by Larson.
Shooting began last May in West Virginia, three months after Larson won the best actress Academy Award for her role in “Room.” She’s also known for Short Term 12 and The Spectacular Now. She will play the lead role in Captain Marvel and will make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. She was most recently seen in Kong: Skull Island.
Harrelson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Messenger and for Best Actor in The People vs. Larry Flynt. He’s also known for his work in the TV series Cheers and the films Zombieland, No Country for Old Men and Now You See Me, as well as the Hunger Games franchise.
Watts is known for her work in the films King Kong, Mulholland Drive, The Ring and The Impossible, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for her work in 21 Grams. She’ll appear in the upcoming TV series Twin Peaks as well as Gypsy.
