Williams is in talks with Sony to costar in Venom as a district attorney and possibly Hardy’s love interest.
Variety reports that Academy Award-nominated actress Michelle has entered talks to join the upcoming Venom movie from Sony Pictures. The report says she’s up to portray a district attorney and possible love interest to Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock. Even though no character name was confirmed, Williams’ role could very well be that of Anne Weying aka She-Venom. It was previously reported that Weying would be appearing in the Venom movie in some capacity, and the description used from this report lines up well with her comic persona. In the comics, she is a lawyer and ex-wife to Eddie Brock, so describing her as a district attorney and love interest falls right in line with that.
Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) are working on the script with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man movies) producing alongside Amy Pascal. Variety confirms that Riz Ahmed is also on board to co-star with Hardy and Williams, although we still have no details on his role. The movie will be Spider-Man-centric, but won’t be related to the Spider-Man cinematic universe, which includes the recent Sony/Marvel Studios collaboration Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Venom previously appeared on the big screen, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Since the release of that film in 2007, rumors have persisted about a solo Venom movie, but various iterations of the project have failed to materialize. Production begins this fall on Venom and it is set for an October 5, 2018 release date.
Williams is most-cognizable from her role on Dawson's Creek. She's been nominated for an Academy Award four times for her work on Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn, and Manchester by the Sea.
Sony did not comment on the casting, but according to the report, Sony Pictures has been considering several actresses for the lead role and decided to offer it to Williams after seeing the trailer for her upcoming film All the Money in the World with Ridley Scott.
