Valkyrie In Thor: Ragnarok Is MCU's First LGBT Character

Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, has been confirmed as bisexual in the film, per the actress herself.

Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is a highly engaging character, with one of the best developmental arcs in the Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. She surely would have been a fan favorite regardless of her sexuality. But it’s still worth celebrating that Valkyrie is bisexual, which is bound to make her an even more popular character. Thompson broke the news on Twitter, wading into a fan discussion about the character to say, “She’s bi”:

"She's bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!"

Marvel director Joe Russo actually hinted at this possibility in May of last year, saying:

“I think the chances are strong. I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible. It’s sad in the way that Hollywood lags behind other industries so significantly, one because you think that it would be a progressive industry, and two it’s such a visible industry. So I think it’s important that on all fronts we keep pushing for diversification because then the storytelling becomes more interesting, more rich, and more truthful.”

To comic book readers, this is not brand new information. Valkyrie’s bisexual status has been established in the comics for years: she has had relationships with men (including Thor and Agent Venom) as well as women (notably the archaeologist Annabelle Riggs). It’s nice to know that Thompson is aware of this comic book history, and that she considers the live-action Valkyrie to share the sexuality of her comic book counterpart. Given that Thompson knows the character better than anyone, it seems fair to take this information as canon.

In "Thor: Ragnarok", Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger, the Incredible Hulk!

The film is directed by Taika Waititi with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 3, 2017.
