Universal Pictures has pegged a May 10, 2019 release date for Legendary Entertainment’s Detective Pikachu.
Ready or not, it's happening and Legendary Pictures has locked down a release date for Detective Pikachu. The film will debut in theaters in the United States on Friday, May 10, 2019. The film will bow on Mother’s Day and a week after an untitled Avengers’ movie from Disney, as well as one week before both John Wick: Chapter 3 and an as-yet untitled Men in Black spinoff film hit the scene.
Currently, there are no solid plot details available for Detective Pikachu. However, it's said to be following the game rather closely, which centers on the lead character, whose father has been kidnapped. He teams up with Detective Pikachu to find his missing father, the female lead is said to be a "sassy journalist" who helps the duo along the way. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pikachu role will be "motion-capture in nature" and that Ryan Reynolds’ particular Pikachu is a "self-styled investigator who is good at finding things". Also starring in the movie, as its human female lead, is Kathryn Newton (Supernatural, Halt and Catch Fire) as the “sassy journalist” who helps Justice Smith’s character and Pikachu out with their wayward investigation. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will helm the project, which starts shooting mid-January in London.
First introduced in Japan in 1996, Pokémon has delighted fans of all ages around the world for two decades. With more than 279 million video games sold worldwide, 21.5 billion TCG cards shipped to 74 countries, and an animated series spanning 19 seasons, Pokémon is one of the most successful entertainment brands in the world.
Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan as it has done with Legendary’s other films for years. The Pokémon Company’s long-time movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it had similarly done in its partnership with Legendary on the iconic monster reboot for Godzilla.
